Remote-controlled beetles for search and rescue

Researchers at the University of Queensland have controlled the movement of living beetles using a game console controller.
They attached a microchip backpack to Zophobas morio beetles. It electrically stimulates their antennae and forewings, producing small movements in the desired direction. The result is precise navigation through complex environments.
The current system uses an external power connection, but in further experiments the beetles have already managed to climb while carrying a battery the size of their bodies.
Their size is only part of what makes them useful. They can crawl through rubble, grip walls, and move through a maze of cracks without sensors or code. Where most robots get stuck, they keep going. They are built for chaos.
The goal is a semi-living rescue system that can enter a collapsed area within minutes, locate survivors, capture images, and transmit data, saving critical hours in the response. Its production cost would be tiny compared with advanced robots, and the system does not harm the insect.
In other words, we are not building a machine that knows how to be a beetle. We are using the beetle and connecting it to a network.
It sounds disturbing. It is also precise, elegant, and thought-provoking. What counts as natural? What is intelligence? Where is the line between use and partnership?
The day is not far off when a cyborg beetle like this finds someone buried under rubble and actually saves a life. The paper describes the work.
